Redd Rants: Trayvon Martin

Trayvon Martin. Now, as many of you may know, Trayvon Martin is the 17 year old boy who resided in Florida, who was shot to death by neighborhood watchmen George Zimmerman, for looking "suspicious". Zimmerman claimed to have done this in self defense, even though Trayvon was only carrying a bag of Skittles and Iced Tea. Now...

Trayvon Martin was probably looking suspicious for only two reasons: 1. Because he was wearing a hoodie, and 2. The most important reason, he was Black.

Even though I am not a Pessimist, this has to be said. Racism still exist. And if we don't do something about it now, this kind of thing will continue to happen.

Because Trayvon was not the first person to die from something like this; and if we don't continue to take action, he won't be the last.

Think of Trayvon as your brother, your father, your cousin, your uncle, your boyfriend, your best friend. Because wearing a hoodie, walking down the street with snacks, and being Black, it could be him too.

This is not something we as a people should take lightly. And although it's obvious that is crime is unjustifiable, there are also other points we have to look at as well.

If Trayvon's killer was black, would we be putting the same effort into this? If this was a Black-on-Black Crime, would we rally together to try and stop the killing of our own race?

It seems as though we can ban together if the crime is racism, but merely say "That's sad," when it's crime within the Black Community.

We as Black's have, and still our, overcoming lots of Adversity. We should be able to stay bound together at all times, not just when there is an outsider wrecking havoc.

And even though I'm not saying in any way, shape, or form, that it was Trayvon's fault because he was wearing a hoodie. Because it's not. Maybe this will influence more men to walk with their pants up, underwear not showing. Even though Trayvon's pants were not sagging, that has been an issue for years. So sad, very true.

Our skin color is something that we can't, and shouldn't ever want to change. But the killing of people within that skin color by people of the same pigmentation and degrading ourselves (nigga this, nigga that, bitch this, bitch that) is where it all starts. It makes other's feel as though they have the "right" to.

Reddlipstick Readers, please continue to rally for Trayvon. And hopefully after we do find justice for him, start and reflect on your own community, and rally for the problems there as well.

XOXO
