Other role models BESIDES Marilyn Monroe

Why is it that whenever I go into one of my friends dorm rooms, look at their screensaver on their computer, or even their Twitter screen name, something with Marilyn Monroe is ALWAYS included? This bothers me, especially for my women of color. Marilyn Monroe was indeed beautiful. I'm guessing her sultry, seductive charm, and her timeless trademarks (white dress, blonde hair, Monroe mole) are what draws females in, even a half a decade later. With that being said, there are alot of other women in that same category who would make just as good, if not better, role models. Read&Indulge for a few role models for women who I would hang up a poster of in my dorm room.

Lena Horne was a groundbreaking, as well as beautiful, woman. Being a singer, actress and activist in the Civil Rights movement, she fits the criteria for young girls looking for that Role Model. Furthermore, Lena Horne was not one to rely on her looks or complexion to get her farther in life. An attitude that most women should take note of.

Beyonce- Love her or Hate her, is a very positive Role Model for females. She's a strong feminist, with either her songs promoting girl power or more recently, being in love with her husband. Beyonce' sets the tone for  "the way it's supposed to be done.": Establishing her career, getting married, and then later down the line, having children. Not too mention making breaking records as far as her music career is concerned.

Michelle Obama-Being the Wife of the First African-American Family of the United States is already enough to have women looking up to you, or at least looking your way. But before she was ever the First Lady, she was a Princeton Graduate, as well as a graduate of Harvard Law School. Michelle Obama is doing many influential things in the community  (once listed as Essence's 25 Most Influential Women), and does it all while being stylish, making the statement that you can look beautiful as well as have a good head on your shoulders.

Jackie-O-Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis,the woman that Michelle Obama has been compared to fashion wise, being a former First Lady herself. Her most iconic outfit being the Pink Chanel Suit she wore the day of her husbands assassination (John F. Kennedy). Jackie-O was noted for being an author, journalist, mother, and fashion icon.

Oprah-This women's name pretty much speaks for itself. World-Rewoned Philanthropist, Journalist, Billionaire, Actress, Author, you name it. All coming from humble beginnings, Oprah's story is indeed one of inspiration, miracle and hard work.
